Cecil O. Samuelson: Steady Leadership Through Growth and Transition

As part of the Utah Valley Chamber’s Pillar of the Valley recognition during the 150th anniversary of Brigham Young University, we continue to honor leaders whose influence has shaped both the university and the broader community.

This week, we recognize Cecil O. Samuelson, who served as president of BYU from 2003 to 2014.

President Samuelson’s tenure was marked by steady, thoughtful leadership during a time of institutional growth, global expansion, and evolving expectations for higher education.

A Leader Rooted in the BYU Mission

With a background as both a physician and a longtime university leader, Samuelson brought a unique perspective to the presidency, one grounded in discipline, compassion, and a deep commitment to BYU’s mission.

Throughout his tenure, he reinforced the university’s core identity as a place where faith and intellect are not only compatible, but mutually strengthening.

He consistently emphasized the responsibility of a BYU education to develop individuals of character, graduates prepared to contribute meaningfully in their professions, communities, and families.

Guiding Growth and Global Engagement

During Samuelson’s presidency, BYU continued to expand its academic offerings and global footprint.

Enrollment growth, increased international engagement, and strengthened academic programs positioned the university to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world.

At the same time, Samuelson remained focused on preserving the values that define BYU, ensuring that growth never came at the expense of mission.

Stability During Times of Change

Higher education underwent significant shifts during Samuelson’s tenure, including technological advancement, changing student expectations, and broader societal conversations about the role of universities.

Through it all, his leadership was characterized by steadiness and clarity.

He approached challenges with a calm, measured perspective, providing continuity and confidence during a time when both were essential.

A Lasting Influence

President Samuelson’s legacy is one of quiet strength and enduring impact.

His leadership helped guide BYU through more than a decade of progress while maintaining a strong foundation for future growth. The stability he provided continues to influence the university today.

As BYU celebrates its 150th anniversary, the Utah Valley Chamber is honored to recognize Cecil O. Samuelson as one of the leaders whose stewardship has shaped the university’s enduring legacy.

On April 14, the Chamber will honor President Samuelson alongside several other former presidents during the Pillar of the Valley celebration, recognizing generations of leadership that have helped define BYU’s role in Utah and around the world.
