Kevin J Worthen: A Decade of Faith-Centered Leadership at BYU

As part of the Utah Valley Chamber’s Pillar of the Valley recognition during the 150th anniversary of Brigham Young University, we are honoring leaders whose vision has shaped not only the university but the broader community it serves.

This week, we recognize Kevin J Worthen, who served as president of BYU from 2014 to 2023.

During his nearly decade-long presidency, Worthen guided the university through a period of meaningful growth, global influence, and renewed emphasis on the institution’s unique mission: combining rigorous academic excellence with a deep commitment to faith.

Strengthening BYU’s Mission

President Worthen often emphasized that BYU’s purpose extends beyond traditional higher education. Under his leadership, the university strengthened its identity as a place where spiritual development and intellectual discovery work hand in hand.

He frequently spoke about BYU’s responsibility to prepare students not only for successful careers, but also for lives of service and leadership throughout the world.

That vision helped shape the experience of thousands of students who passed through BYU during his tenure.

Academic Excellence and Global Reach

Throughout Worthen’s presidency, BYU continued to expand its academic reputation and global engagement.

New research initiatives, expanded academic programs, and strengthened international partnerships helped further BYU’s role as a university with worldwide influence.

At the same time, the university continued to maintain its distinctive faith-based foundation, something Worthen consistently emphasized as a defining strength rather than a limitation.

Leadership During a Time of Change

Worthen also led the university during a time of significant cultural and societal change, navigating complex conversations about faith, education, and community with thoughtfulness and steady leadership.

His approach reflected a deep belief in the power of education to unite people around shared values of integrity, curiosity, and service.

A Lasting Legacy

Today, President Worthen’s influence can be seen across the BYU campus and throughout its global alumni network. His leadership helped strengthen the university’s mission while preparing it to continue evolving in a rapidly changing world.

As BYU celebrates its 150th anniversary, the Utah Valley Chamber is honored to recognize Kevin J Worthen as one of the leaders whose stewardship has helped shape the university’s enduring legacy.

On April 14, the Chamber will honor Worthen alongside several other former presidents during the Pillar of the Valley celebration, recognizing the leaders who have guided BYU through generations of growth and impact. Sponsorships are still available.
