As Brigham Young University commemorates 150 years, the Utah Valley Chamber is honoring the presidents whose leadership has shaped the university’s academic excellence, spiritual foundation, and global influence.
In the weeks leading up to the April 14 Pillar of the Valley celebration, we are spotlighting one president each week, reflecting on the defining moments of their tenure and the enduring legacy they leave at BYU.
We now turn to President Rex E. Lee, who served from 1989 to 1995 and brought to BYU a rare combination of national legal distinction, personal humility, and unwavering dedication to service.
A Leader of Principle and National Influence
Before becoming president of BYU, Rex E. Lee had already established himself as one of the nation’s most respected legal minds. As solicitor general of the United States, he argued dozens of cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and earned a reputation for integrity, clarity, and principled leadership.
Yet for all his national accomplishments, his focus remained deeply personal, centered on faith, family, and the responsibility to serve.
That perspective shaped his presidency at BYU.
Strengthening BYU’s Academic and Spiritual Mission
President Lee believed deeply in the university’s unique role in higher education. He understood that BYU was not meant to mirror other institutions, but to offer something distinct: an education where faith and intellectual rigor are fully integrated.
As he taught:
“Our integration of [faith and academic achievement] constitutes our unique contribution to the restored kingdom, and also our unique contribution to American higher education.”

The dedication of the BYU Museum of Art, early work on the Dead Sea Scrolls project, and the foundation for a major capital campaign all pointed to a university preparing for the future.
His leadership helped position BYU to move confidently into the 21st century, expanding its reach while remaining anchored in its mission.

Perhaps one of the most defining aspects of President Lee’s life was his determination to serve, even in the face of profound personal challenges.
Diagnosed with serious illness during his presidency, he continued to lead, teach, and contribute at the highest levels. In the final chapter of his life, he was still preparing a case for the U.S. Supreme Court, working from his hospital room in the days leading up to his passing.
That commitment reflected not only discipline, but a deep sense of purpose.
It is a legacy of resilience, faith, and dedication that continues to inspire.
